German Defense Minister has ordered to close the military attaché’s office at the German embassy in Minsk because of the numerous violations of human rights in Belarus.
Thomas de Maiziere, German Defense Minister recalled all the members of the attaché's office from Minsk on December, 2. The closure of the office followed demarche of both countries, reports BelaPAN.
Let us recall that in September 2012 the German federal government decided to diminish military cooperation with Belarus because of the continuing persecution of government opponents there. In response, the Belarusan government stopped military cooperation with Germany. German media reported that Germany had trained Belarusan police to break up street protests and supplied them with equipment.
In reply the German interior ministry claimed that Germany had mainly cooperated with border control agency of Belarus and that even that cooperation, ratified by Chancellor Angela Merkel, had been suspended following the breakup of the post-election protest in Minsk on December 19, 2010. However, according to German media, German police officers had held training seminars for Belarusan colleagues until October 2011 and continue to maintain unofficial contact with them.
He said Belarus would likely face economic tightening not only as a result of the coronavirus pandemic but also a Russian trade oil crisis that worsened this past winter.
