Let us recall that Miklos Haraszti, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in the Republic of Belarus, published his first report that was presented to the Human Rights Council on 4 June 2013. Haraszti said that the situation with political prisoners raises deep concern, Euroradio reports. He also recalled that the Belarusian authorities did not let him into the country and refused to cooperate with him.
Haraszti’s report has caused objections of Mikhail Chvastou, the official representative of Belarus to the UN. The diplomat said that the report is used to exert political and economic pressure on Belarus. "Belarus does not need a special rapporteur or similar institutions. We know what problems we have, and are ready to tackle them. We have our own model based on national sovereignty, security and the rule of law. We deny the allegations contained in the report, and proclaim that the conclusions of the report are acceptable to us, "- Chvastou said.
Belarus' position was supported by Russia, Cuba, Venezuela, China, Lebanon, Uzbekistan, Palestine, Iran, and Syria.
He said Belarus would likely face economic tightening not only as a result of the coronavirus pandemic but also a Russian trade oil crisis that worsened this past winter.
