Council of Europe and the EU call on Belarus to abolish death penalty

Thorbjørn Jagland, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe and High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini issued a declaration.
On the eve of the World Day against Death Penalty that is celebrated today, on October 10, the Council of Europe and the EU call on Belarus to abolish death penalty.
“The Council of Europe and the European Union deplore the continuing use of the death penalty in Belarus, - the statement says. – We strongly urge the authorities of Belarus to commute the remaining death sentences and establish without delay a formal moratorium on executions as a first step towards abolition of the death penalty”.
The declaration stresses that in the countries-members of the Council of Europe and the EU death sentences haven’t been pronounced for 18 years now.
He said Belarus would likely face economic tightening not only as a result of the coronavirus pandemic but also a Russian trade oil crisis that worsened this past winter.
The Belarusan National Platform of the EaP CSF issued a statement in connection with the wave of searches in the editorial offices of the Belarusan media and the detention of journalists.
