From April 28 to May 6 the Office for Rights of Persons with Disabilities organizes a series of events dedicated to the subject of breaking down barriers and obstacles that impede fully-fledged life.
According to the Office's press service, this year open debates, round tables, meetings with experts, movies, exhibitions, and lectures will be organized in Minsk, Brest, Homel, Hrodna, Babruisk, Valozhyn, Navapolatsk and Polatsk.
"Accessibility is a possibility to enjoy legal and social rights, a possibility to choose and to take responsibility, - says the press service of the Office for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. – All events are united by a common goal - to create the conditions to ensure equal rights of all members of our society. This is an attempt to draw attention to the problem of accessibility for persons with disabilities, to change its perception and understanding, as well as motivate others for further actions."
This year’s central events are a public presentation "Zero report on the situation with human rights of persons with disabilities", presentation of the first in the country universal design manual, as well as the Accessibility Forum, which will take place in Minsk on May 6. In the course of the week people who are affected by the issues of disability, will be able to get free legal advice.
The organizers believe that the events of the Accessibility Week will increase people’s awareness of the accessibility as well as learn about the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its basic principles. Now it is especially important, because at the end of 2015 Belarus signed this international document and now makes first steps towards its ratification.
