Belarus Foreign Ministry: OSCE should focus on conflict prevention

Prevention and regulation of conflicts should be among the OSCE priority goals, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Belarus in the OSCE Alexander Sychev said in the OSCE Annual Security Review Conference (ASRC) in Vienna.

“Unfortunately, the OSCE potential in the area needs perfection. Difficult and inconsistent nature of a conflict demands a careful and well-thought approach, with strict observance of consensus rules. The most important thing here is to step up cooperation between the international organizations within the Euro-Atlantic region. The initiative to hold a meeting between the heads of five international organizations (EU, OSCE, CSTO, Nato, CIS) is vital in this context. Belarus also suggests involving the parliamentary dimension in the dialogue on the European security,” the Belarusian diplomat noted.

Alexander Sychev expressed confidence that the OSCE summit meets the interests of security strengthening in the Euro-Atlantic region and the OCSE on the whole. Belarus supports Kazakh relevant initiative. “We consider it important to decide upon a high-level meeting in the near future. We hope an informal ministerial meeting in Almaty in July will help coordinate the agenda of the summit,” the Belarusian representative stated.

The Annual Security Review Conference is under way in Vienna on 14-16 June. The participants of the event are considering the OSCE activity in prevention and regulation of conflicts, commitment to the arm control agreements and fulfillment of measures to strengthen trust and security, counteraction to new transboundary threats and challenges.
