Belarusan President has explained the discrepancies caused by the changes submitted for consideration by the Central Election Committee.
“Relaxing restrictions, we must make sure that it will not produce a negative effect on the stability in the country and the situation during elections. There should not be any wilfulness and absence of control,” Aliaksandr Lukashenka stressed.
Changes to the Election Code should be made for the benefit of the Belarusian people instead of competing with other states, the President said.
Aliaksandr Lukashenka mentioned the changes that “had not been supported by everyone”. Most discrepancies were caused by “the norms concerning changes in the rules of financing of election campaigns”, he noted. In particular, it was suggested increasing election funds and allowing their creation before candidates are registered.
The President will send the bill to the House of Representatives in August or September taking the results of the today’s meeting into account, CEC chairperson Lidzija Jarmoshyna told Euroradio last week.
He said Belarus would likely face economic tightening not only as a result of the coronavirus pandemic but also a Russian trade oil crisis that worsened this past winter.
