Regular round of collection of signatures for the adoption of the Law “On animal protection” within the framework of the “NO to animal cruelty” campaign was launched.
The petition claims that animal cruelty in Belarus became widespread: people throw their pets in the street having gotten tired of those, cripple and sometimes even kill them. While there is animal control and possibility to keep stray animals in shelters in Minsk and other big cities, in smaller towns stray animals are simply being slaughtered.
The activists believe that it’s time to join civilized countries where animal control is based on a humane approach and animal cruelty is being punished, belngo.info informs.
The petition will be sent to the President, members of the Parliament and Government of Belarus. It can be signed online. Unlike some other online petitions, this one has legal value and shall be subject to compulsory consideration by all the bodies it has been addressed to.
Just to remind you, last spring 820 petitions were sent to the prosecutor’s office seeking implementation of criminal punishment for animal cruelty. The prosecutor’s office sent everyone a reply stating that is has considered and approved changes to the Art.339-1 of the Criminal Code “Animal cruelty” prepared by the National Law and Legal Studies Centre of Belarus. The Parliament was to adopt changes to the Criminal Code during its spring-summer session, but the consideration was put off until October.
