“I don’t see any crime in the attempt of Belarusan police to learn something from German police. Everyone - from the highest ranks to the lowest ones - simply has to observe the law”.Miachyslau Gryb, former Speaker of the Supreme Council of Belarus, retired Lieutenant General of Police commented to the EuroBelarus Information Service on the situation with the bilateral contacts between German and Belarusan police, which have finally brought to dismissal of the chief of German federal police, Matthias Seeger.
“I know that there have been contacts with FRG police before, because the authorities of the Belarusan Ministry of Internal Affairs, I think, have fairly regarded the work management in German police being at a much higher level. There is always a lot to learn from them. And if the other, German side, collaborated, why shouldn’t have we learnt something from them?”, retired Lieutenant General of Police wonders.
According to him, “German police is a well-educated, professionally trained body, technically equipped at the state of art level”. “There is much to learn from this body concerning crime control, actions against mass disorders”, emphasized the expert.
The former Speaker of the Supreme Council of Belarus sees the problem only in putting into practice the knowledge obtained by the Belarusan side from the foreign colleagues during the training. “The problem, I think, is not about who's been trained, where and how. It is just that in Germany everything is done according to the law. Unfortunately, we do everything according to the authorities’ orders, which do not always comply with the law,” stressed Miachyslau Gryb.
Let us recall that the fact of the FRG police and Belarusan police collaboration in 2008-2012 drew close attention of German mass media. The Tagesspiegel, for example, reported on the presence of Belarusan police as observers at the dispersal of mass antinuclear demonstrations, during which German police used truncheons, riot gas and water cannons.
The retired Lieutenant General of Police noted that the latest scandal will have negative impact on “the development or promotion of contacts between Belarusan and foreign police, especially from the EU member countries.” “Scandals never bring anything good”, Miachyslau Gryb believes.
