A boy needs help (a letter)

23.04.2008  |  Publications

"His name is Anton and he urgently needs heart transplant surgery. This operation can only be undertaken in Germany and will cost 250,000 Euro with 100,000 Euro required as an advance payment. This amount will pay for the operation itself plus 30 days of post-operative medical care, however up to 250,000 Euro more may be required to cover the costs of implantation of supplementary equipment in a subsequent operation.  Therefore, in total up to 500,000 Euro may be needed. At the present time 45,000 Euro have been donated by inhabitants of Gomel so only 55,000 Euro more is needed to complete the advance payment.

In November 2007 Anton underwent surgery in Minsk at a cost to his parents of 20,000 Euro. This operation was intended to prolong his life for several more years while the necessary resources were gathered for the procedure outlined above, however, recently his condition has worsened. In the opinion of the doctors he only has several months left to live. There is very little time. We have to act together. The parents alone will not be able raise this amount.

My sister and her husband will donate 5,000 Euro. Our family will donate a total of 1,500,000 Byr. Anton's parents have already appealed to the Presidential Charity organization for assistance but their request was rejected on the grounds that no funds were available; the typical response where money is concerned. I am planning to visit our churches in Gomel; we can make big posters with his photo (as it is on the website) and place them by the church gates, where the believers will see them. I think we will manage to collect the money -  there is only 50,000 Euro lacking to make the first payment.

The main issue here is that the person that wants to live - survives and tells his relatives and friends about this. He would explain that it was not a 'scam' but a real tragedy for a normal family and that the Government left them on their own vis-a-vis this tragedy. That is why we must all work together to help them.

The parents are collecting money from their colleagues at work and sending “call for help” letters to all their co-workers.

The boy does not need sympathy, he needs real action. It is important that anyone knowing about the situation asks themselvesf: "If not me, then who?" And decides for himself what he could do personally, who should be addressed to help this family. Please send this letter to everyone you know."
