Belarus reiterates the need for a UN strategy to combat human trafficking

The Belarusian diplomatic mission at the UN informed BelTA
that at UN headquarters in New York The Permanent Mission of the Republic of
Belarus in conjunction with the New York office of the UN Office on Drugs and
Crime conducted a briefing on the development prospects for the UN strategy to
combat human trafficking.

UN thematic debate on
According to the Permanent Representative of Belarus
to the UN, Andrei Dapkunas, the purpose of the briefing was to draw
international attention to the need for concerted, comprehensive and
coordinated approaches to eradicate trafficking in persons, as well as to
propose for discussion by the UN and other partner organizations at the
thematic debate, elements of a future strategy for action.
"The idea of a strategy to combat human
trafficking has existed in the UN for some time. We are now trying to lead
Member States to understand the desirability and appropriateness of such a
strategy, to provide a clearer picture of the forms that it can take, and to suggest
how to help improve coordination and intensification of the efforts of UN
States in this direction, "- said Andrei Dapkyunas.

According to the UN there are about 1 million victims of this criminal business annually. Approximately 700 thousand of them are sold for sexual exploitation. Human trafficking has thus become one of the most profitable areas of criminal activity.
