Belarus and Latvia plan to complete the demarcation of the
Latvian-Belarusian border by the end of 2008. The issue was on the
agenda of the annual consultations between the foreign political
departments of Belarus and Latvia that took place in Riga. A Belarusian
delegation was headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Valery Voronetsky,
Latvian by Deputy Sate Secretary of the Foreign Ministry Edgars Skuja.
As BelTA was told in the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, Valery
Voronetsky and Edgars Skuja exchanged information about the political
and economic situation, foreign political priorities of the two
countries. The sides discussed the prospects of development of
bilateral political relations, trade and economic cooperation,
investment and transit issues, interaction in consular and humanitarian
issues and identified the priorities in developing the treaty-legal
base.
The participants of the consultations noted the gradual and
earnest bilateral cooperation in trade and economic, consular,
environmental, culture and educational areas.
A separate issue on the agenda was the relations between
Belarus and the European Union. The sides voiced their positions on the
issue concerning the normalisation of the relations, gradual transition
to the constructive pragmatic and mutually beneficial cooperation.
When in Latvia Valery Voronetsky also met with Director of the
Permanent International Secretariat of the Council of the Baltic Sea
States (CBSS) Dr. Gabriele Kotschau.
“The sides exchanged the opinion on the prospects of increasing
Belarus’ presence in the CBSS programmes. Dr. Gabriele Kotschau
stressed that the CBSS member states would like to boost interaction
with Belarus in environmental protection, education, youth exchange,
transfrontier and regional cooperation areas. The sides discussed the
ways of intensifying efforts to speed up the ratification by the CBSS
member states of the amendment initiated by the Republic of Belarus to
Kyoto Protocol Supplement B.
Valery Voronetsky also visited the assembly facility of MAZ at
the Latvian company Alkomtrans and the MTZ Service Company which sells
and provides maintenance services to the Belarusian tractors.
