Draft law on registration of online Media may be put on public discussion

The Ministry of Information is considering the suggestion of BAJ to include experts of BAJ and representatives of the online community into a public discussion of the amendments.
Let us recall that in November 2013 the Ministry of Information came out with a suggestion to give Internet resources the status of Mass Media.Dzmitry Shadko, Deputy Minister of Information claimed that such amendments to the legislation will enable online media to “bear responsibility for distributing any kind of information” and they “could be deprived of their registration if necessary”.
In December 2013 BAJ sent an official letter to the Information Ministry and to Usevalad Yancheuski, head of the ideological department of President’s Administration, asking to provide updates about the current work over the project of amending the Mass Media Law, and if any draft law has been prepared, to make it public and open for discussion.
According to the BAJ press service, in the official letter to the Information Ministry, BAJ asks to include experts of BAJ and representatives of the online community into a public discussion of the amendments, and also to hold a broad public discussion on the topic.
Usevalad Yancheuski replied to BAJ request regarding the government's idea to register and regulate mass media operating online.
According to the reply dated January 11, “The Ministry of information has been charged with the task to bring up the issue /…/ for public discussion, with the participation of bodies and organizations concerned, and also to involve /…/ representatives of journalistic organizations and online communities.”
