The memory of the victims of political repressions was honoured not only in Belarus. Due to sadly known events the head of the Center for Legal Transformation Elena Tonkacheva cannot be in Minsk now.
That’s why Elena Tonkacheva organized a chamber demonstration-reminder in Vilnius, where she lives and works after the decision of the Belarusan state to forbid the human rights fighter to enter Belarus for three years. Let us recall that Belarusan and international human rights organizations are considering this decision as a vengeance for Elena Tonkacheva’s active civic stance.
On the night of October 30, 1937 in Belarus NKVD (the secret police agency in the Soviet Union – EuroBelarus) killed 130 prominent children of Belarus: poets, writers, and men of culture and education. “Big terror” touched upon the whole country, but this night was particularly significant – Belarusan society still feels the consequences of extermination of the national elites.
In many post-Soviet countries the memory about such events is officially commemorated; however, Belarusan authorities have been ignoring this date. Nevertheless, the society remembers it!
