According to Anatoly Liabedzka, in the near future the United Civil Party will address the Constitutional Court in relation to the deployment of the Russian military base in Belarus.
Anatoly Liabedzka, the leader of the United Civil Party (UCP) shared his plans for the last month of summer with the EuroBelarus Information Service.
- We started consultations with the expert community regarding the appeal to the Constitutional Court about the legality of the Russian military base at the territory of Belarus. Our preliminary consultations show that from the point of view of constitution, there are big problems. Of course, we don’t expect some determinations of law; however, it can be a topic for public discussion. Sociological research shows that the majority of Belarusians don’t support the idea to deploy Russian-based defence facilities in Belarus.
Simultaneously with that we prepare another document, which will be addressed to the leaders of the three countries – Russian Federation, Great Britain and the United States of America, with the following question: as at the territory of Belarus there appeared another country’s military base, do the signers of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty confirm that the security guarantees given to Belarus in December 1994 in Budapest remain in forth, both politically and judicially?
According to Liabedzka, “we will set aside August for that, and that will end with a great press-conference”.
- Military expansion as nothing else touches upon the issues of our country’s sovereignty. Perhaps, after the required consultations we’ll convene the Supreme Council. And it is up to this Council to make statements about such strategic problems as security and sovereignty.
