Speaking at the 26th Session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on June 18, Miklos Haraszti told about the systematic character of the serious repression of all human rights in Belarus, UN Tribune informs.
The government in Minsk, headed since 1994 by President Aliaksandr Lukashenka, is the only parliament in Europe without opposition, marked Haraszti.
According to Special Rapporteur, Belarus is also the only country in Europe that retains the death penalty. He exemplified his words with two April executions, which were carried out in secret.
“In April 2014, two new executions were carried out in secret. Those facing the death penalty, and their relatives or lawyers are neither informed of the scheduled date of execution nor where the body is buried,” - Special Rapporteur said.
He also said there was increased repression before and during Belarus’s recent hosting of the World Ice Hockey Championships.
Haraszti held out little hope that next year’s presidential election would result in an improved human rights situation. He believes that chronic restriction of human rights has led to recurrence of violence over the last 15 years, typically at times of elections and the announcement of their preordained outcomes.
“During the recent local elections in March 2014, the right to elect was in practice again denied, as 88 percent of constituencies were uncontested,” – emphasized Miklos Haraszti.
EU and US representatives supported the conclusions drawn by the Special Rapporteur. They called on Belarusan authorities to cooperate with Miklos Haraszti and immediately release and rehabilitate all political prisoners.
As “
EuroBelarus” Information Service earlier reported, official Minsk is continually refusing to cooperate with Miklos Haraszti.
Let us recall that official Minsk is not going to cooperate with the Special Rapporteur of the UN Human Rights Council and is hardly ready to open UN OHCHR office in Belarus.
