An initiative group for preparation of a founding congress of "For Statehood and Independence of Belarus" movement was created. The meeting of the group took place on May 24 near Minsk.
The group is headed by well-known poet, politician, a presidential candidate in the 2010 elections, Uladzimir Niakliaeu.
Representatives from different Belarusian regions and cities and well-known political, cultural and civil activists, such as scientist Liavon Barshcheuski, painters Ales Shaternik, Aliaksei Marachkin, Jazep Janushkevich, filmmaker Valery Mazynski and others took part in the meeting were among them.
"In more than twenty years of although formal, but still independent state, there grew up people who have absorbed the Belarusian spirit and understanding of Belarus as an independent state. It is they who will be responsible for its future, and, as shown by today's meeting, they are ready to assume this responsibility," BelaPAN quoted Niakliaeu saying.
Deputy Chairman of the organization will be Aliaksandr Meh, a well-known civil activist from Kobrin. Representatives of every Belarusian province will also be appointed deputies. Aliaksandr Meh reminded us of the threat to the sovereignty of Belarus:
"The power network in our territory have in fact been lost and transferred into the wrong hands, same is true about the military bases. It's time to say "no" to it, and it can be done only by the people for whom independence is the highest value."
Belarus’ independence is threatened like never before, Niakliaeu also said at the meeting. “Resistance to the Russian expansion is the main reason for the creation of the movement”, Euroradio quotes him saying.
The decision about participation in this year’s presidential election will be made soon.
The plans to create a national movement were disclosed by Uladzimir Niakliaeu a month ago in the program Garachy Kamentar (Hot Commentary).
