US Senator McCain: I believe we made a mistake when we didn’t expand NATO to Belarus 5-10 years ago

A US official said that answering to the question at the GLOBSEC Global Security Forum in Bratislava on Saturday.
US Senator John McCain was participating in the 10th annual GLOBSEC Global Security Forum that took place in Bratislava from June 19 until June 21.
When asked by a moderator of the conference whether the senator believes that “Europe and NATO may have missed the trick 5-10 years ago in not giving these countries themselves a clear path to be part of the community which, in terms of values, we want to defend”, the senator answered positively.
- I believe we should have, and at the time I urged that it happened. A decision was made particularly in regards to Ukraine, that, and there were internal problems in Ukraine as well, obviously, they missed a golden opportunity because of the divisions within the new government after they gained control, - John McCain said, adding that he believes it “was one of the mistakes”.
He said Belarus would likely face economic tightening not only as a result of the coronavirus pandemic but also a Russian trade oil crisis that worsened this past winter.
